The Nexon, which dominated the four-wheeler market in December last year, lost ground to the Baleno as the best-selling car in January 2024. Most of the vehicles on the list experienced year-over-year sales figures that were extraordinarily high. Maruti Suzuki Baleno
In January 2024, Maruti Suzuki Baleno emerged as the best-selling car, with a monthly volume of 19,630 units, marking a 20% YoY increase. The domestic automaker delivered 16,357 units of the hatchback in the same time in the year before. The Hyundai i20 competitor features a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission. With this configuration, it generates 89bhp and 113Nm. When running on CNG, the car produces 76.4bhp and 98.5Nm with a 5-speed manual transmission. The popular Maruti Suzuki hatchback is priced at Rs 6.66 lakh (starting, ex-showroom).
Tata Punch
The well-known Tata compact SUV—the Punch—came second on the sales chart last month, right after the Baleno. Tata Motors sold 17,978 units in January, indicating a noteworthy YoY increase of 50% over the same month the previous year. The car's 1.2-liter petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT, produces 86.7bhp and 115Nm. The car produces 103Nm and 72.49bhp while operating on CNG. Tata Motors also launched a brand-new electric powertrain option for the Punch in January. The Medium Range (MR) and Long Range (LR) versions of the new Punch. ev is available for purchase, with an ex-showroom starting price of Rs 10.99 lakh.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR
Another hatchback marvel from the Maruti Suzuki stable, the WagonR, landed in the third position. With 17,756 sales, the car was on the best-selling list despite having an underwhelming year-over-year performance. The automaker sold 20,466 WagonR cars at that same time last year. A 1-litre unit with 66bhp and 89Nm, as well as a 1.2-litre mill with 89bhp and 113Nm, are the two petrol engine choices available for the WagonR. A 5-speed AMT or a 5-speed manual is included with both units. The prices for the WagonR range from Rs 5.54 lakh to Rs 7.42 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Tata Nexon
The Nexon SUV dropped to fourth place in January sales, after being the best-selling model in December last year. Tata Motors reported the sale of 17,182 Nexon cars last month, a 10% YoY increase over the 15,567 delivered at the same time in 2022. The Nexon SUV was redesigned last year with a starting price of Rs 8.10 lakh. There haven't been any significant mechanical changes made to the powertrain in the facelift. The 1.5-litre diesel with 113bhp and 260Nm and the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 118bhp and 170Nm are still offered.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
While the recently spotted updated Dzire is anticipated to be launched soon, the current edition successfully maintained the fifth position among the best-selling cars in January. The company delivered 16,773 units of the sedan, up 48% from 11,317 units sold last year. Similar to the Swift, the sedan is driven by a 1.2-liter Dualjet petrol engine that produces 89bhp and 113Nm, combined with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The motor produces 76bhp and 98.5Nm, connected to only a 5-speed MT gearbox in CNG mode. In our market, the sedan is priced between Rs 6.51 lakh and Rs 9.39 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom.
