2024 Toyota Hilux Globally Unveiled with Mild-Hybrid Tech and New Features
The new Toyota Hilux's 48-volt technology comprises a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine; a motor generator; a 48-volt battery; a six-speed automatic transmission; as well as a DC/DC converter enabling a stop/start system.
Having introduced a mild-hybrid version of the Hilux in Europe in 2023, Toyota has taken the wraps off the 2024 iteration of the pickup truck in the Australian market. The facelifted version, now in its eighth generation, comes with cosmetic changes, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and new features. Toyota says the new Hilux Hybrid will arrive in Australian showrooms in March this year.
2024 Toyota Hilux: Powertrain Details
The 48-volt technology is the biggest talking point of the new Hilux. It comprises a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine; a motor generator; a 48-volt battery; a six-speed automatic transmission; as well as a DC/DC converter enabling a stop/start system and enhancing what Toyota says driveability and fuel efficiency while reducing noise, vibration and harshness.
Besides, the mild-hybrid technology, introduced last year in the European market, is said to improve engine smoothness and fuel economy of the turbo-diesel engine by 6 to 10 per cent compared to the current-generation Hilux. In Australia, it comes standard on 4x4 Rogue and automatic SR5 double cabs, and is optional for 4x4 SR double cabs. These variants also feature a Multi-Terrain Select with six driving modes.
Sean Hanley, Vice President – Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, Toyota Australia, said, "Introducing 48-Volt technology on double-cab Hilux models is an exciting step forward, improving fuel efficiency while still providing performance and capability that the Hilux is known for".
In terms of performance, the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel unit makes 201bhp and 420Nm/500Nm when mated to either a manual or automatic transmission. On offer are also other engine options: a 2.4-litre diesel and a 2.7-litre petrol, paired with their respective gearboxes.
2024 Toyota Hilux: Features
Features-wise, the 2024 Toyota Hilux gets two front and four rear parking sensors (as standard) for ease of navigation through tight spaces. Depending on the variant selected, the pickup truck comes with a 7.0-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone air conditioning, smart entry and start, a wireless charging pad, two rear USB-C ports, auto up/down function on all four windows, and carpet floor mats.
2024 Toyota Hilux: Cosmetics
On the outside, the Australia-spec Toyota Hilux gets a revised front fascia defined by a new octagonal grille, dark-tinted LED headlamps, and a redesigned bumper. Other visual bits include gloss black fog lamp bezels, exterior mirrors, outside door handles, and new 17-inch alloy wheels.
2024 Toyota Hilux: India Launch?
As mentioned earlier, the 2024 version of the Hilux will make its way into the Australian market next month. This version is not likely to arrive in India; but, the 48-volt mild-hybrid tech could be added to the diesel engine here. As of now, Toyota India offers the Hilux in the range of Rs 30.40 lakh to Rs 37.90 lakh (ex-showroom).
