autoX Awards 2024: Tata Punch EV Performance, Quality and Value for Money Ranked
autoX Awards 2024: The petrol-powered Tata Punch’s powertrain was one of its weakest aspects during our initial drives; while it was smooth, it lacked impressive performance. However, the Punch EV, with its 120 horsepower and 190Nm of torque, delivers a more spirited drive, depending on the mode you select.
autoX Awards 2024: Among the electric-powered contenders in our jury round tests, the Tata Punch EV was one we were particularly eager to assess. The ICE-powered version of the Tata Punch had already impressed us, and during our first drive review of the electric variant, it did the same. But the question was – how will it fare against the competition at this year’s autoX Awards? And how does it compare in overall appeal to the Tigor EV and Nexon EV?
Inside, the Punch EV offers a more distinctive experience compared to its ICE counterparts. It features a dual-tone, leather-covered steering wheel adorned with an illuminated Tata logo. The all-digital instrument cluster feels thoughtfully integrated rather than an afterthought, featuring crisp graphics and extensive functionality. The touchscreen display also effectively complements the overall in-cabin experience. All in all, the Punch EV made a strong initial impression.
The petrol-powered Punch’s powertrain was one of its weakest aspects during our initial drives; while it was smooth, it lacked impressive performance. However, the Punch EV, with its 120 horsepower and 190Nm of torque, delivers a more spirited drive, depending on the mode you select. In Eco mode, the throttle response is subdued, making it ideal for relaxed cruising. Yet, it can effortlessly reach triple-digit speeds before hitting its limited top speed of 120 km/h. City mode enhances throttle sensitivity and removes the speed cap, offering a practical setting for everyday driving. In fact, both modes are good enough for everyday driving conditions. For those seeking excitement, Sport mode is the one to go for. In this mode, the throttle response is lively enough to create gaps with ease, though it falls short of being exceptionally fast.

The handling of the Punch EV is equally engaging and compliant. With the ICE-powered Punch, we had a few complaints about its handling characteristics, and Tata Motors’ engineers deserve credit for getting the handling balance just right. While tackling rough or uneven surfaces, the Punch absorbs undulations effortlessly. At the same time, when pushed into corners, it remains composed and never feels out of place. This same impressive handling is exhibited by the electric version as well. Overall, the Tata Punch EV stands out as a well-equipped compact SUV with mature handling dynamics, which managed to impress the jury.
