Toyota Fortuner Legender, Track Test
Although primarily a facelift, the 2021 Toyota Fortuner is not only the most stylish iteration of the rugged off-roader to date but also the most powerful one. You see, while the 2.8-litre diesel mill has been carried over from before, Toyota has significantly bumped up its power and torque output.
In January this year, Toyota brought in the updated version of the second-generation Fortuner, which packs some significant updates, to our shores, along with an even more enticing and visually appealing version – the Fortuner Legender.
Although primarily a facelift, the 2021 Fortuner is not only the most stylish iteration of the rugged off-roader to date but also the most powerful one. You see, while the 2.8-litre diesel mill has been carried over from before, Toyota has significantly bumped up its power and torque output. The Legender AT version that we tested produces an impressive 201bhp and 500Nm of torque. Add to this mix an eager six-speed automatic gearbox and the Sport mode, and what you get is a 2.6-tonne behemoth that is quite happy to be thrown around some of the tightest bends of the Buddh International Circuit. Yes, you read that right.
Never in my wildest dreams did I see myself driving a Fortuner on the track, with a smile on my face. But, I must say that with the latest updates, the Fortuner’s drivetrain has become really impressive – a fact that’s highlighted by its impressive scores in the Refinement and Drivetrain categories.
Plus, it’s not just the refinement of the drivetrain that impresses you. An improved list of features, the use of better-quality materials in the cabin, and the fresh exterior styling truly make the 2021 Fortuner more desirable than ever. But before you start taking your chequebook out, let me draw your attention to some figures.
The version we tested is priced at ₹38.6 lakh (ex-showroom), and if you wish to opt for the range-topping Legender 4x4, you must be prepared to spend ₹42.33 lakh before taxes. So, all these updates and improved features come at a hefty price. But, given that it’s a Fortuner, does it really matter? After all, the model is nothing short of a brand in itself.
